CONCEPT

The idea behind the show was to create an art project that is educational, entertaining and engaging. We want to make Shakespeare come alive and reach out to young people because Shakespeare is as accessible and relevant today as it was to Elizabethan audiences. The project can be conducted as part of English Literature programme in Britain and Ireland as well as a complementary element of the English as a Foreign Language programme in other countries. It can take up to 20 hours of teaching sessions and teachers can choose parts or all of the following:

  1. Preparation for the show may involve
    • Using worksheets provided
    • Pre-teaching vocabulary from the show
    • Reading extracts from Romeo and Juliette
    • Reading extracts from Midsummer Night’s Dream
  2. Attending the I Love Shakespeare show
    • Following the show
    • Active involvement in the interactive parts of the show
  3. Taking part in The Life and Times of William Shakespeare Workshop
    • Finding out more about the life and work of William Shakespeare
    • Putting the show in the context of the times
  4. Follow up work
    • Using worksheets provided
    • Checking comprehension of the show and the workshop
    • Reading extracts from The Merchant of Venice
    • Discussion of issues such as love, getting married, social status
